General Questions
Q: What is counselling?
A: Counselling is a confidential conversation with a trained professional. We listen, ask questions, and support you in understanding yourself better and moving toward change. It's like talking to a trusted friend who brings expertise and genuine care.
Q: Do I need to be in crisis to come to counselling?
A: Not at all. Counselling can help with major challenges AND with everyday struggles or confusion. Many people come when they want to understand themselves better, explore their values, or work through a specific challenge—even if it doesn't feel "serious."
Q: How is counselling different from talking to a friend?
A: Friends are wonderful, but a counsellor brings professional training, tools, and a specifically designed space for your healing. We don't judge, we maintain confidentiality, and we help you move toward real change.
Q: Is counselling right for me?
A: If you're wondering whether counselling could help, the answer is likely yes. We can discuss whether Sakhee is the right fit during a free introductory call. No pressure, no commitment.
Q: How do I get started?
A: Simply reach out! Email, WhatsApp, or book a free 15-minute consultation using our online calendar. We'll take it from there.
About Sessions
Q: How long is each session?
A: Standard sessions are 50 minutes. The first session may be slightly longer as we get to know each other.
Q: How often should I come to counselling?
A: This depends on your needs and what feels right for you. Some people come weekly, others bi-weekly or monthly. We'll discuss what works best for you.
Q: Can I do sessions online, or do I have to come in person?
A: Both! We offer online sessions via secure video call and in-person sessions. Choose what works best for your comfort and schedule.
Q: What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
A: We ask for 48 hours' notice if you need to reschedule—life happens, and we get it. If we don't hear from you by then, we'll need to charge the full session fee to hold your spot.
Q: What if I don't feel comfortable with my counsellor?
A: It's important that you feel heard and safe. If the fit doesn't feel right, we can discuss this openly. We're happy to help you find a counsellor who's a better match, with no hard feelings.
Q: Can we just text or email instead of meeting?
A: Text or email is great for scheduling, but counselling works best in real conversations (video or in-person). This allows for deeper connection and better support.
Confidentiality & Privacy
Q: Is what I share really confidential?
A: Yes. Everything you share in sessions is completely confidential. We don't discuss your sessions with anyone—not family, friends, employers, or other professionals—without your explicit written permission.
Q: Are there any exceptions to confidentiality?
A: In rare circumstances, we may need to share information without your consent:
- If there's immediate risk of serious harm to you or someone else
- If there's suspected child abuse or abuse of vulnerable adults
- If legally required by court order
We will always discuss these situations with you openly.
Q: How are my records kept?
A: Session notes are securely stored and encrypted. We comply with GDPR and all data protection regulations. You have the right to access, correct, or request deletion of your data.
Q: Can I bring someone to my session?
A: Sessions are private, one-on-one spaces. However, if you have accessibility needs or specific reasons you'd like someone present, let's discuss it.
Practical Matters
Q: How much does counselling cost?
A: [YOUR PRICING]. We also offer reduced rates for those who need them—just ask when you contact us. There's no shame in discussing affordability.
Q: Do you accept insurance?
A: I'd encourage you to check with your individual fund, as policies do vary — and I'm always happy to provide you with an itemized receipt to submit on your behalf if your fund does offer a benefit.
Q: What if I can't afford regular sessions?
A: We believe counselling should be accessible. We offer sliding scale rates based on your financial situation. Please be honest about what you can afford—we'll work something out.
Q: Can I do just one or two sessions?
A: Absolutely. Some people find even one session helpful. That said, ongoing support often leads to deeper change. But it's entirely your choice.
Q: What's the commitment? Can I stop anytime?
A: There's no long-term contract or commitment. You can stop anytime. We just ask that you communicate this so we can discuss what you need and do a proper closing.
About Your Counsellor
Q: What are your qualifications?
A: Please refer to the About page and you'll get full details about me :)
Q: Do you have experience with my specific issue?
A: I work with a wide range of challenges—anxiety, relationships, identity, grief, life transitions, and more. If I think you'd benefit from a specialist in a specific area, I'll be honest about that and help you find the right support.
Q: Can I choose a male or female counsellor?
A: I am a female counsellor, who loves to work with women and teen girls, coaching, empowering and supporting them through their journey called life.
Q: Will you judge me?
A: Never. Counselling is a non-judgmental space. Your story, your experiences, your feelings—they all matter. You won't be judged here.
Q: How is cultural background addressed in counselling?
A: Being a woman of color myself, cultural sensitivity is central to how I work. We explore how your background, values, and lived experiences shape who you are. You don't have to explain yourself or compromise your identity.
Specific Concerns
Q: I'm worried counselling won't work for me.
A: Many people feel this way at first. Counselling is a process—it takes time and openness. If you're willing to explore and be honest, meaningful change is possible. We can discuss concerns during your first session.
Q: What if I get emotional in sessions?
A: That's completely normal and okay. Crying, getting angry, or feeling overwhelmed are all part of healing. We create a safe space for all emotions.
Q: My family doesn't think I need counselling. What do I do?
A: This is your choice. You're an adult (or a young person who deserves support). Your mental health matters. You don't need anyone's permission to take care of yourself.
Q: I've tried counselling before and it didn't help. Will this be different?
A: Maybe. Different counsellors and approaches work for different people. Sakhee might be the right fit—or we can help you find someone who is. The free consultation is a good way to explore this.
Q: I'm not sure what my "issue" is. Is that okay?
A: Absolutely. Some people come in crisis; others come feeling stuck or unclear. Both are valid reasons. We'll explore together in a non-pressured way.
Q: Is counselling the same as therapy?
A: Counselling and therapy are similar but slightly different. Counselling tends to be shorter-term, focused on specific issues. Therapy can be deeper and longer. We can discuss what might work best for you.
